Hotel Riu Funana Review | Sal, Cape Verde All-Inclusive
Hotel Riu Funana, Sal — The Complete All-Inclusive Resort Review
If you want a lively, sociable, great-value family holiday on Sal — with non-stop entertainment, a water park next door and drinks flowing 24 hours a day — the Hotel Riu Funana is a classic crowd-pleaser. It's the long-established, fun-first member of RIU's three-hotel beachfront complex in Santa Maria, and it remains a firm favourite with families and groups who'd rather have a buzzy holiday than a hushed one.
This is our honest, in-depth review: the vibe, the rooms, the food, the pools and kids' facilities, the famous nightlife, and how Funana compares to its two RIU neighbours. The short version? It's energetic, well-run and excellent value, with brilliant entertainment — just don't expect a quiet boutique bolthole.
Resort Overview & Vibe
The Riu Funana is a five-star, 24-hour all-inclusive resort run on RIU's family-focused "Fun4All" concept. It's a large, energetic property best known for its fantastic animation team and packed entertainment schedule, which makes it a natural fit for families, groups of friends and anyone after an active, sociable holiday rather than a silent retreat.
The atmosphere is upbeat and inclusive from morning to night — pool games and music by day, live shows and parties after dark. It shares facilities (and a lot of its fun) with its sister hotels next door, so even though it's a "classic" resort rather than the newest on the block, it never feels short of things to do.
Location & The Beach
The Funana enjoys an excellent position in southwestern Sal, close to the action. The lively centre of Santa Maria is about 1.5km away — a pleasant 20-minute walk along the seafront or a quick, cheap taxi ride (typically just a few euros). The airport (Amílcar Cabral International) is roughly 15–18km away, around a 20-minute transfer.
One honest detail worth knowing: unlike the beachfront Riu Palace Santa Maria, the Funana sits a short walk back from the sand — the beach is around 300m from the hotel, equipped with sun loungers and parasols. It's an easy stroll, but if being directly on the beach matters to you, factor that in. As across Sal's breezy south coast, the Atlantic here can be choppy with currents, so heed the beach flags when swimming.

Rooms & Accommodation
The hotel has 572 rooms across six categories, spread between the main building and a cluster of two-storey annex buildings set in the gardens. All are comfortable and practical rather than flashy, with air conditioning, satellite TV, a fridge, safe, complimentary Wi-Fi and a private balcony or terrace.
Double & family rooms. Sensible, roomy layouts that work well for couples and families alike, many with a sofa bed to sleep children.
Suites. The larger suites add an integrated lounge area and a sofa bed, giving families a bit more breathing space and separation for a longer stay.
As standard across RIU, rooms come with the brand's in-room drinks dispenser and a restocked mini-fridge, so the all-inclusive continues on your own terrace.
Food & Drink: Restaurants and Bars
With 24-hour all-inclusive service you're never far from a meal or a snack. There are four restaurants, and as always it's wise to book the speciality venues early in your stay.
- Espargos — the main buffet restaurant, serving generous international spreads for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with live show-cooking stations, vegetarian options and a couple of themed buffet nights each week.
- Mandalay — the Asian restaurant, served as an evening sitting by reservation.
- Kulinarium — the à la carte gourmet restaurant, again by reservation, for a smarter dinner.
- Mambana — the poolside grill/steakhouse, open through the day for casual buffet meals and snacks, with a reservation-only grill in the evenings.
Drinks are well covered by seven bars dotted around the resort, including the "Mindelo" swim-up pool bar (adults only), the "Santo Antão" lobby bar, the lively Batucada stage-and-dancefloor bar, a 24-hour sports bar, and the "Sal" beach bar. There's also a patisserie/snack option for round-the-clock cakes and coffee.
Pools, Splash Water World & Kids' Clubs
The pools. There's a large outdoor pool complex with two main pools — one of them heated in the winter months (roughly November–April) and fitted with the swim-up bar — plus hydro-massage areas, in-water loungers, a jacuzzi and a separate children's pool, all wrapped in sun terraces facing the beach.
Splash Water World. A big family win: Funana guests get free access to Splash Water World, the water park located at the neighbouring Riu Palace Santa Maria, just ~100m away. It's billed as the largest on Sal, with a range of slides. Note the 1.20m minimum height (recommended age around 12) for the big slides — younger children stick to the Funana's own kids' pool.
RiuLand kids' club. The supervised RiuLand club runs daily (typically a couple of sessions, morning and afternoon) for two age groups — 4–7 and 8–12 — with face-painting, drawing, team sports, beach and pool games led by RIU's mascot Calú, plus a nightly mini-disco. There's an outdoor playground and the dedicated children's pool too. A quick caveat for parents of the very young: RiuLand starts at age 4, so under-4s will need a parent alongside them.
Entertainment, Activities & Renova Spa
This is where the Funana really earns its reputation.
Daytime activities. The RiuFit programme offers aquagym, aerobics and fitness sessions, alongside beach volleyball, a multi-sports court, table tennis and more. There's even a RiuArt atelier where guests can try painting and crafts — a nice touch on a windy afternoon.
Nightlife. Evenings bring live music and shows, and the famous themed weekly "RIU Party" — Funana is actually the host venue, so guests at the neighbouring RIU hotels come here for it. Guests also get free entry, with drinks included, to the "Pacha" nightclub (open to over-18s, roughly six nights a week — typically closed Tuesdays). It's a proper, Ibiza-flavoured night out without leaving the complex.
Renova Spa. For downtime, the wellness centre includes a gym, jacuzzi/whirlpool and steam bath (generally complimentary for over-18s), with massages and beauty treatments available for an extra charge.
The RIU Showdown: Funana vs. Cabo Verde vs. Palace
The three neighbouring RIU hotels share a beachfront and many facilities, which confuses a lot of buyers. Here's how to choose:
- RIU Funana — the energetic, classic family-friendly resort and the hub of the complex's nightlife (RIU Party and Pacha). Great value and high on entertainment. Best if you want fun and sociability over polish.
- RIU Cabo Verde — the more relaxed, strictly adults-only (18+) option right next door, for couples and groups wanting a calmer, child-free base while still close to the action.
- RIU Palace Santa Maria — the newest, premium five-star choice, sitting right on the beach and home to Splash Water World, the heated pool complex and exclusive adults-only swim-up rooms.
Because they're side by side, you can dip into shared facilities — so wherever you book, the water park and party nights are within reach.
