3 Days in São Vicente & Santo Antão: Itinerary
Three Days in São Vicente (with a Santo Antão Day Trip)
Mindelo's culture, the green mountains of Santo Antão, and the best of São Vicente's coast, all from a single base.
Three days is the ideal length for a first visit to São Vicente. It gives you a full day to enjoy Mindelo's squares, markets, and music, a day across the channel in the dramatic green valleys of Santo Antão, and a day exploring São Vicente's summit and coast. Best of all, you can stay in the same hotel all three nights.
Only have one day? See our guide to One Day in Mindelo.
At a Glance: The Three Days
Day 1: Mindelo. The historic centre, the markets, the waterfront, and sunset at Laginha.
Day 2: Santo Antão. The ferry to Porto Novo, the old mountain road, the Paúl valley, and a cliffside village.
Day 3: São Vicente's Island Loop. Monte Verde, Baía das Gatas, Calhau, and São Pedro.
Where to Stay: Central Mindelo or Laginha, for all three nights.
Transport: On foot on Day 1, a ferry and a driver on Day 2, and a taxi, driver, or rental on Day 3.
Section 1: Planning Your Three Days
A few decisions to make before you go.
One Base. Stay in central Mindelo or at Laginha for all three nights. Central Mindelo puts the ferry terminal within walking distance for Day 2. See Where to Stay in São Vicente.
Book the Ferry and a Driver in Advance. For Day 2, book your ferry tickets to Santo Antão ahead, especially at busy times, and arrange a driver or guide to meet you in Porto Novo. Public transport on Santo Antão won't get you around the island's highlights in a single day.
Have a Backup Plan. Ferries are occasionally cancelled or delayed by rough seas. If Day 2's crossing doesn't run, swap Days 2 and 3, and never plan the Santo Antão trip for the same day as your flight home.
Check the Summit. Monte Verde and the mountains of Santo Antão are often in cloud. If one day is clearer than another, adjust.
Day 1: Mindelo
The city's squares, markets, and waterfront, ending with sunset at the beach.
Morning: The Historic Centre & Markets. Start at Praça Nova, the city's main square, and visit CNAD, the national centre for crafts and design. Walk along Rua de Lisboa to the pink Palácio do Povo, the former government palace. Then visit the Municipal Market, the historic market hall from 1878, and the fish market on the waterfront, liveliest in the morning. Finish by browsing the stalls around Praça Estrela and the African market for fabrics and crafts.
Lunch. Grilled tuna, grouper, or cachupa at a café in the centre or a restaurant along the waterfront. Try moreia, crisp fried moray eel.
Afternoon: History & Views. Visit the Torre de Belém, the replica of Lisbon's Belém Tower built between 1918 and 1921, now home to the Museu do Mar. Then climb to Fortim d'El Rei, the small fort from 1852–1853 above the city, for a panoramic view over Mindelo and the harbour.
Late Afternoon: Laginha. Walk along the promenade to Laginha for a swim in the calm water and sunset over Monte Cara.
Evening: Music. Dinner in the centre, then follow the music. Evenings traditionally start around Praça Nova, with live morna and coladeira in the bars and restaurants nearby.

Day 2: A Day Trip to Santo Antão
Cape Verde's greenest, most dramatic island, just across the channel.
Early Morning: The Ferry. Catch the morning ferry from Mindelo's harbour to Porto Novo on Santo Antão, a crossing of around an hour. Check the current timetable when you book, since departure times vary. The channel is often choppy, so take seasickness tablets before you board if you need them.
Morning: The Old Mountain Road. Meet your driver in Porto Novo and head up the Estrada da Corda, the historic cobbled road that climbs through the mountains to the island's green north. Stop at the rim of Cova, an ancient volcanic crater farmed on its floor, often with cloud spilling over its edges, and at the viewpoints along the Delgadinho ridge, where the road runs along a narrow crest with steep valleys dropping away on either side.
Midday: The Paúl Valley. Descend into the Paúl valley, one of the greenest places in Cape Verde, with terraces of sugarcane, bananas, papayas, and mangoes. Visit a traditional sugarcane mill to see how grogue is made, and taste it. Stop for lunch at a local restaurant in the valley.
Afternoon: Fontainhas. Continue along the north coast to Fontainhas, a tiny village perched dramatically on a ridge above the Atlantic, one of the most photographed places in the islands.
Late Afternoon: Back to Mindelo. Drive back to Porto Novo in time for the afternoon ferry to Mindelo. Leave a good margin, since the drive back takes time. Have a relaxed dinner near the marina and an early night.
Want More Time? A day trip only scratches the surface. Santo Antão is Cape Verde's best hiking island, and it rewards a few nights. Our Mindelo to Santo Antão guide explains the ferry and the options.
Day 3: São Vicente's Island Loop
The summit, the lagoon, the east coast, and the turtles.
The easiest way to do this day is with a taxi driver or private driver for the day, or with a rental car. Agree the price and stops in advance.
Morning: Monte Verde. Drive up the winding cobbled road to Monte Verde, São Vicente's highest point at 744 metres. On a clear day, you'll see the whole island and across to Santo Antão, Santa Luzia, and São Nicolau. Stop at the rustic tea house near the summit, if it's open, for herbal tea, coffee, or a local liqueur. Go early, before the clouds build.
Late Morning: Baía das Gatas. Descend to Baía das Gatas, a natural lagoon enclosed by volcanic rock, for a swim in its calm, shallow water.
Lunch: Calhau. Continue to Calhau on the east coast, set among volcanic cones, for a seafood lunch of grilled fish, octopus, or lobster overlooking the rock pools, with views across to the uninhabited island of Santa Luzia.
Afternoon: Salamansa & São Pedro. Pass through Salamansa, a fishing village backed by dunes, then head across the island to São Pedro, the long, windswept beach near the airport, where windsurfers ride the bay.
Optional: The Turtles. At São Pedro, local boatmen offer trips to swim with green sea turtles. Many of these encounters depend on feeding the turtles, which changes their natural behaviour. Read our guide to Swimming with Turtles at São Pedro first, and if you go, choose an operator that doesn't feed or touch the turtles. The sea is usually calmer in the morning, so if the turtles are a priority, you can reverse the day and start in São Pedro.
Evening: A Farewell Dinner. Back in Mindelo, finish with fried moreia, fresh seafood, and live music.
Section 2: Practical Tips
The details that make three days run smoothly.
Ferry. Book ahead, arrive early at the terminal, and have a backup day in case of cancellation.
Getting Around. Walk in Mindelo on Day 1. Book a driver on Santo Antão for Day 2. Hire a taxi or driver, or rent a car, for Day 3. A 50cc scooter isn't recommended for Monte Verde, which is too steep for small engines.
Money. Carry cash in Escudos or Euros for markets, taxis, boat trips, and small restaurants, especially on Santo Antão, where cards are less widely accepted.
What to Pack. A light windbreaker for Monte Verde, Santo Antão's mountains, and the ferry deck; sturdy walking shoes; swimwear; reef-safe sunscreen; and seasickness tablets if you need them.
Budget. Our São Vicente Cost & Budget Guide covers ferry fares, taxi prices, and daily costs.
