Mindelo Carnival: History, Parades & How to Experience It
Cape Verde's greatest festival: how it works, the key days, the groups, and how to plan your visit.
For a few weeks each year, Mindelo turns into a stage. Drum rehearsals echo through the neighbourhoods from early in the year, the mandingas take to the streets, and it all builds to a night-long parade of floats, costumes, and samba drums through the historic centre on Carnival Tuesday. It's the biggest cultural event in Cape Verde, and one of the most exciting times to visit the country.

Section 1: Why Mindelo's Carnival Matters
More than a party: a year-round labour of love for the whole city.
Mindelo's carnival is the country's most famous, rooted in the port city's cosmopolitan history and strongly influenced by Brazil's samba carnival, woven together with Cape Verdean music and African rhythms. It's a neighbourhood affair: each official group is tied to its community, and preparations involve hundreds of people. The work begins months before the parade with the choice and presentation of each group's theme (enredo), after which workshops start building floats, seamstresses sit down at their machines, and the groups begin daily rehearsals. The workshops are kept fairly secret, but with a little luck you might get to visit one.
Section 2: The Build-Up
Carnival season is weeks long, not just a few days.
Rehearsals. In the weeks before carnival, groups rehearse their drum sections (baterias) and dances in their neighbourhoods. Hearing a rehearsal on a warm evening is a wonderful way to feel the anticipation building.
The Themes. Each group presents its enredo, the story its parade will tell, often celebrating Cape Verdean history, identity, or its own neighbourhood. In 2025, for example, Monte Sossego paid tribute to its home district in the year the group celebrated 40 years of existence.
The Mandingas
The mandingas are among the most distinctive traditions of Mindelo's carnival. Groups cover their bodies in dark paint and wear costumes of rope, raffia skirts, and adornments, dancing through the streets to fast, driving drums on the Sundays leading up to carnival. They're loud, energetic, and a highlight for many visitors. Enjoy the spectacle, and keep an eye on your clothes: the paint rubs off.
Section 3: Carnival Week, Day by Day
The general pattern of the week. Exact times, days, and participants vary from year to year.
Friday & Saturday: Schools & Children. Carnival week traditionally opens with parades by schools and kindergartens, with handmade costumes, bands, and a great deal of joy. It's a reminder that carnival is, above all, a festival of schools and children, strengthening the link between generations.
Sunday: Animation Groups. The Sunday is typically given over to the animation groups, informal groups whose satirical costumes often poke fun at politicians and current events.
Monday: Samba Tropical, Mandingas & More. On Carnival Monday, the parade route opens with the Escola de Samba Tropical, a samba school that parades separately from the competition. Monday night can also include the traditional teachers' parade and mandinga groups.
Tuesday: The Great Parade. The main event. Five official groups make up the "first league" of carnival: Cruzeiros do Norte, Estrela do Mar, Flores do Mindelo, Monte Sossego, and Vindos do Oriente. They compete for the title with elaborate floats (carros alegóricos), costumes, drumming, and dancers through the streets of the historic centre. The parade starts in the evening, and in 2025 the parade of the five official groups carried on until around 3 in the morning.
Wednesday: The Results. The winners are announced on Ash Wednesday afternoon on Rua de Lisboa. The competition is close: in 2025, Cruzeiros do Norte beat Monte Sossego by just eight-tenths of a point, after Monte Sossego had won in 2020, 2023, and 2024.
The Following Sunday: The Burial of the Mandingas. The season closes with the "burial" of the mandingas, a humorous, symbolic farewell parade that sends carnival off until the following year.
A Note on Changes. The programme depends on funding, organisation, and each group's circumstances. In 2026, four major groups, Monte Sossego, Vindos do Oriente, Estrela do Mar, and Samba Tropical, decided not to parade for lack of conditions, and the organisers added a free public concert on Rua de Lisboa. Before booking your trip around a specific parade, check the current year's programme with local news or the municipality.
Section 4: Street Carnival
You don't need a ticket to join in.
Beyond the official parades, the whole centre becomes a party. Informal groups, brass bands, and crowds fill Rua de Lisboa and the squares, many in homemade or recycled costumes. Food stalls along the route serve cachupa, churrasquinho (grilled meat skewers), cold Strela beer, and grogue and ponche. Joining in, whether in costume or not, is part of the experience.

Practical advice for a great visit.
Planning & Booking
Accommodation. Central Mindelo books out, and prices rise sharply, around carnival. Book three to six months ahead.
Flights. International flights to São Vicente and domestic connections fill up too. Book early, and avoid tight connections, since domestic delays and cancellations happen.
Dates. Carnival follows Easter, so check the exact dates for your year. The Tuesday parade is the one to plan around.
Where to Watch
Grandstands. Seating is sometimes set up along the parade route for the Tuesday parade. Ask locally how to get seats and whether tickets are needed.
On the Street. Standing among the crowds along the route is louder, more crowded, and more fun. Arrive early for a good spot.
Where to Stay
Stay in central Mindelo or at Laginha, so you can walk to and from the parades without needing a taxi late at night. Light sleepers should note that the centre is very noisy throughout carnival. See Where to Stay in São Vicente.
Practical Tips
Cash. Withdraw Escudos early. ATMs can run low during the busiest days, and food stalls and street vendors are cash only.
Stay Comfortable. Wear comfortable shoes, since you'll be standing for hours, and bring water. The Tuesday parade runs late into the night.
Protect Your Ears. The drums are very loud. Bring ear protection for young children.
Watch Your Belongings. Crowds attract pickpockets. Carry only what you need, and keep your phone secure.
Getting Home. After the parade, taxis are in heavy demand. Plan how you'll get back, or stay within walking distance.
Respect. Carnival is a community celebration that takes months of work. Ask before photographing people up close, especially children, and follow stewards' instructions around the parade route.
