Restaurante Hamburg, Calhau

The Experience. Out in the east-coast fishing village of Calhau, Restaurante Hamburg is well worth the trip from the centre. It's calm and relaxed, far from the bustle of Mindelo, and ideal for an unhurried lunch by the sea.

What to Order. Fish is clearly the focus. Fried grouper (garoupa frita) is among the most popular choices, and the grilled tuna stands out for its freshness.

Best For. A long seafood lunch as part of a day exploring the east coast, with Calhau's rock pools and volcanic scenery nearby.

Seafood in the Centre

Along Avenida Marginal and around the marina, several restaurants specialise in grilled fish, octopus, and lobster, often with views over Porto Grande. For the freshest fish, ask what came in that morning, and see the fish market by the Torre de Belém for what's in season.

Kalimba Beach Club, Laginha

Pastelaria Morabeza. One of the city's most popular pastry shops and cafés, a favourite for breakfast, coffee, and pastries.

CNAD. The café at the national crafts and design centre is a good place to combine a coffee or a simple lunch with a visit to the exhibitions. Check that it's open when you visit.

Section 5: Cheap Eats & Street Food

Eating well for a few Euros.

The Prato do Dia. Local eateries serve a dish of the day, often fish, stew, or cachupa, at modest prices. With an espresso, it typically costs around 500 CVE. Fish soup at simple local places can cost as little as a few hundred Escudos.

Churrasquinho. In the evenings, street stalls grill skewers of chicken or beef with onions for around 100 CVE each. Chicken sandwiches (sandes de frango) are sold alongside.

Festival Nights. At carnival, festivals, and busy weekends, cooks set up grills along the streets of the centre, sometimes grilling lobster tails right on the pavement.
