Monte Verde: Hiking São Vicente's Highest Peak

How to reach the top of São Vicente, by trail, road, or taxi, and what you'll see when you get there.

São Vicente is a dry, brown island, which makes Monte Verde, the "Green Mountain," all the more striking. Rising above the east of the island, it catches moisture from passing clouds, turning its slopes greener than anywhere else on São Vicente, and on a clear day the view from the top takes in the whole island and several of its neighbours. It's one of the classic outings from Mindelo, whether you hike, drive, or do a bit of both.

Section 1: The Mountain

A green island in a brown one.

The Summit. Monte Verde, Portuguese for "green mountain," rises in the eastern part of the island and, at 744 metres, is São Vicente's highest point. It lies around 6 km east of Mindelo's city centre. Geologically, it's a stratovolcano.

Why It's Green. The mountain's height lets it catch moisture from the trade winds and passing clouds, giving its upper slopes a cooler, damper climate than the rest of the island. The result is noticeably greener terrain, farms, and plants that wouldn't survive on the dry lowlands.

The Natural Park. The mountain and its plants are protected within Monte Verde Natural Park, the only natural park on São Vicente. It's an important refuge for the island's native flora: tour operators describe some 93 plant species in the area, 17 of them endangered.

Section 2: How to Get to the Top

Four ways up, from strenuous to effortless.

Option A: Hike from the Base

The Route. Travel to the foot of the mountain by taxi or aluguer, then hike up the footpath on the mountainside. Along the way you'll pass endemic plants, farmers, livestock, and old abandoned homes. The trail includes stairs, moderate inclines, and rocky sections.

Time & Distance. Around 2 hours up, covering roughly 5 km on guided routes.

Difficulty. Moderate. It's not technical, but you'll need reasonable fitness, good balance, and sturdy shoes.

Option B: Walk the Road from Mindelo

The Route. A paved road about 5 km long runs all the way to the top, and the total distance from central Mindelo to the peak is around 11 km. Walking the whole way from the city is a long, steady uphill climb from sea level.

Time. Allow most of a morning to walk up, especially in heat.

Difficulty. Challenging, mostly because of the length and the exposure. Start early, and bring plenty of water.

Option C: Drive, Taxi or Aluguer

The Road. The road to the summit is cobbled and narrow, snaking up the mountainside, and it was paved by residents of São Vicente decades ago.

By Taxi. The easiest option. Agree a return fare, including waiting time, before you set off.

By Aluguer. Alugueres on the island's ring road can drop you near the start of the mountain road. One traveller paid 200 CVE for the ride.

By Scooter. Check your rental contract first. At least one rental company has specifically told customers not to take a 50cc scooter up Monte Verde, because it's too steep for small engines. A more powerful scooter or a car is a better choice.

Option D: Drive Up, Walk Down

Take a taxi to the top, enjoy the views and the tea house, then walk back down the winding road toward Mindelo, with the harbour and city spread out below you. It's the most relaxed way to combine the views with a walk, and it's all downhill. Guided tours often do something similar, hiking up and returning by the road.

Section 3: The View from the Top

The reason everyone makes the trip.

The Island. On a clear day, the view from the summit takes in the whole of São Vicente: Mindelo and its bay, Monte Cara, and the beaches and villages of the east and north coasts, with dunes and sand stretching toward Baía das Gatas and Salamansa.

The Neighbouring Islands. On a clear day, you can see Santo Antão, São Nicolau, and Santa Luzia, along with the islets of Raso and Branco, the uninhabited nature reserves off Santa Luzia.

Cloud. The same moisture that makes the mountain green means the summit is often in cloud or mist. Look up at the mountain from Mindelo before you go: if the top is hidden, you won't see much. One visitor suggests going only in sunny weather, with the early afternoon often clear.

Section 4: The Tea House

A welcome stop at the summit.

Near the summit, inside the natural park, a rustic tea house serves herbal tea, coffee, and local liqueurs, a welcome reward after the climb. Guided tours often include a drink. It's small and informal, so check that it's open before you go up if you're counting on it.

Section 5: Practical Tips

A few things that make the trip better.

Check the Weather. Go on a clear day, and look at the summit from Mindelo before leaving.

Bring a Layer. It's cooler and windier at the top than in Mindelo. Pack a light windbreaker or fleece.

Water & Sun. Carry water and sun protection, especially if you're hiking or walking the road, since much of the route is exposed.

Footwear. Trainers are fine on the cobbled road; wear sturdy shoes or boots for the footpath, with its stairs and rocky sections.

Dogs. You may meet dogs near the summit. Visitors report that they're friendly.

Stay on the Paths. The park protects rare and endangered plants, so don't pick them or cut across vegetation.

Combine It. Monte Verde fits easily into a day around the east of the island, with Baía das Gatas, Salamansa, or Calhau.

Guided Hikes. If you'd rather not organise transport, guided hikes from Mindelo include pickup, a guide who explains the plants and landscape, and often a drink at the tea house.
